Executive Function

Executive function is a set of mental skills that help the brain manage itself and get things done by allowing you to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks, control impulses, and stay focused. Think of it as the "management system" of the brain, controlled by the frontal lobe, which helps you with daily activities like setting goals, remembering details, and adapting to new situations. The three main core skills are working memorycognitive flexibility (or flexible thinking), and inhibitory control(self-control). 

Some kids struggle more than others with developing strong EF skills, especially those with ADHD/ADD,  and benefit from support.  Kids with ADHD/ADD can experience a developmental delay of up to 3 years in EF skills. Thus, it is important to finds supports an interventions during school years, especially middle school as demands on EF increase.
